OpenBot
Open-source AI coworkers that each get a computer of their own.
What is OpenBot?
OpenBot is an open-source platform from the team behind the AG-UI protocol (CopilotKit) for running teams of AI agents that work like coworkers. Each agent gets its own channel you message by name — the way you would tag a teammate — plus its own computer: a real Chromium browser, a workspace volume, and only the tools you have granted it. It relaunched on Product Hunt on October 12, 2026 and finished #2 Product of the Day with hundreds of upvotes.
The core pitch is governance, not just automation. Every browser, file, MCP, or component action passes through a policy gateway that checks permissions against a per-tool allowlist, writes an audit row, and only then acts — or refuses and names the rule. Bring any AG-UI-speaking agent (LangGraph, Mastra, CrewAI, Pydantic AI, Google ADK, or one you write by hand) and your own model keys, and your documents, vectors, and conversations live in your own Postgres. The code is MIT-licensed with a free Intelligence plan available, but the commercial runtime dependency means it is not fully vendor-independent.
Key Features
- One channel per agent: message each bot by name like a teammate, with history intact
- A computer per agent: dedicated Chromium browser, files, and logins for every bot
- Policy gateway: every action checked against permissions and recorded in an audit log
- Bring any AG-UI agent: LangGraph, Mastra, CrewAI, Pydantic AI, Google ADK, or hand-written
- Fail-closed company knowledge: answers cite the documents they came from; unclear permissions return nothing
Pros
- MIT-licensed and self-hostable with no seats to count
- Governance (permissions + audit trail) rides the protocol, not the framework
- Works with the agent stack you already use — no forced rewrite
Cons
- Still early — treat it as beta, not production-ready for sensitive credentials yet
- Running it needs a CopilotKit Intelligence project and license token on top of the open code
- Needs Docker, Postgres, and your own model API keys to operate — no bundled model
Pricing
- Model: Free
- MIT-licensed and free to self-host; needs a free CopilotKit Intelligence project plus your own model API keys — check the official site for current pricing.
