What is 1Password for Agents?

1Password launched 1Password for Agents on October 22, 2026: a new trust layer that lets personal AI agents sign into your accounts without ever seeing or storing your passwords. The mechanics work like two-factor approval: when a supported agent hits a sign-in page, it proves its identity to 1Password with a unique digital key, you see which credential it wants and why on your own device, and if you approve, 1Password fills the password or one-time code directly into the form — then removes it so the agent can't read or reuse it.

Launch partners span the personal-agent landscape: Meta's Muse, Anthropic's Claude Duet, OpenAI's ChatGPT Work and Dots, SpaceXSI's Grok Bot, and startup Town's Townie agents, with nine more companies (including Browserbase, Perplexity, and Ramp) building integrations. Access is granted per session for the specific items you approve, connecting an agent never opens your whole vault, and the feature is included at no extra cost with 1Password Individual and Family plans on 1Password.com. The timing is pointed: US banks have reportedly begun detecting agent activity inside customer accounts, and the old habit of pasting passwords into a chat window leaves copies nobody can control.

Key Features

  • Agents authenticate to 1Password with a unique digital key, never touching your vault
  • Every sign-in requires your explicit approval on your own device
  • 1Password autofills the credential directly — the agent only learns access was granted
  • Per-session, per-item access; the agent can't roam your vault
  • Works across personal agents: Muse, Claude Duet, ChatGPT Work, Dots, Grok Bot, Townie

Pros

  • Solves the most dangerous habit in agentic AI: pasting real passwords into chat windows
  • Explicit per-request approval model keeps you in control of every login
  • Cross-vendor launch partners make it the de facto trust layer for personal agents

Cons

  • Rolling out in stages — Muse and Grok Bot go first, with Claude Duet, ChatGPT Work, Dots, and Townie still 'coming soon'
  • Accounts hosted on 1Password.eu and 1Password.ca are not currently supported
  • Protects the password, not the session — an agent can still read or act inside an account once signed in

Pricing

  • Model: Paid
  • Included at no extra cost with eligible 1Password Individual and Family plans on 1Password.com. Accounts hosted on 1Password.eu or 1Password.ca are not currently supported.
