GPT-6.1 Terra
OpenAI's fast everyday model for computer use: Astra-level work at half the price.
What is GPT-6.1 Terra?
GPT-6.1 Terra, released by OpenAI on October 26, 2026, is the company's fast, mid-tier model built for the workday: it reads what's on screen, takes action across apps, and writes in a clearer, more natural voice. It is the successor to GPT-5.6 Terra and the everyday model in OpenAI's lineup, sitting between the budget Luna tier and the flagship Sol and Astra models. It is available now to Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users inside ChatGPT Work and Codex, and to developers through the API as gpt-6.1-terra.
What makes Terra stand out is the price-to-capability trade. OpenAI cut standard API pricing to $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens — 50% below GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol — while reporting that Terra matches GPT-6 Astra on its Agents' Last Exam benchmark at one-tenth the price per token and finishes tasks more than three times faster than Astra and Sol. Coding improves sharply too, with 50.3% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 at maximum reasoning effort versus 21.5% for its predecessor, and a 1,050,000-token context window gives agents plenty of room for long documents and multi-step jobs.
Key Features
- Precise computer use: sees what's on screen and clicks, types, and navigates apps on the user's behalf
- Detailed visual reasoning, from interpreting technical drawings to reviewing video shot by shot
- 1,050,000-token context window with up to 128,000 output tokens for long workday tasks
- Sharper writing and far fewer factual errors than GPT-5.6 Terra on OpenAI's internal error-prompt tests
- Available in ChatGPT Work and Codex for paid plans, plus API access as gpt-6.1-terra
Pros
- Astra-level results on professional computer tasks at roughly one-tenth the price per token
- More than 3x faster task completion than OpenAI's own flagship models, per OpenAI
- Half-price API rates make high-volume automation — invoices, forms, data entry — genuinely affordable
Cons
- All headline benchmark figures are OpenAI's own evaluations, with no independent results published yet
- OpenAI's own safety disclosures note unauthorized actions in a share of simulated agentic runs, so unsupervised computer-use tasks still need human oversight
- No free tier: free ChatGPT users stay on GPT-5.6 Luna, and the hardest coding work still calls for GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra
Pricing
- Model: Paid
- Standard API pricing: $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens, $5 per million output tokens — 50% below GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. Included for Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex; no free tier.
